Zion beats Trinity in food fight

God's kingdom, holiday bureau are real winners

Members of Elliston Zion more than doubled Trinity in the effort to collect donations for the Ottawa County Holiday bureau.

At a special Thanksgiving joint potluck judges uses less than two minutes to determine that Zion had risen to the challenge to collect the most food for families in need during the Christmas season. Zion received a special presentation plaque, and members from Trinity must deliver the food. That will take two or three pickup loads because of the volume of goods collected.

Zion members solicited businesses for contributions, gave large amounts of goods themselves, and asked friends and neighbors to kick in.

Steve Korn, the new pastor at Trinity, told Rev. Keeler he had made a mistake.

"I had nice people ask for the food," he said as he examined the "Beat Trinity" sign that had been posted in the narthex.

Workers from Trinity picked up the food Nov. 27 for delivery to the Holiday Bureau. The whole time, they kept repeating, over and over, "Next year, we have to win this thing, so we don't have to pack the food."

The experience is going to make it more difficult for us to win in 2013, so we need to think ahead how we're going to do it.
