"Turkey Plate" Prize goes to Trinity UCC

Posted on Tue, Nov 26, 2013

More than a ton of food donated for needy

Members from Trinity UCC and Elliston Zion UMC gathered Sunday for their annual Thanksgiving Dinner potluck, held this year at Trinity. They shared in an incredible meal, saw a brief filmed presentation on Pastor Steve Korn's trip to the storm-battered Philipines, shared in a 10-minute Thanksgiving devotional video, and then competed in this year's Holiday Visitor's Bureau food giveaway competiton.

Juvenile Court Judge Kathleen Giesler, assisted by Brenda Helwig, conducted this year's judging before triumphantly proclaiming that Trinity UCC had gathered the most food, and Rev. Keeler passed the "turkey plate," an award honoring the church that won the competiton, into Judge Giesler's hands. It will be displayed through the coming year at Trinity.

Zion's prize for coming in second was that its members received the honor of delivering this year's collection of food to a designated Holiday Visitor's Bureau distribution site. A team of about a dozen workers boxed up loose items, loaded vehicles and carried the food, more than a ton in all, to Oak Harbor United Methodist Church, where it will be packaged up into holiday baskets and distributed to needy families.

"I give you this plate with joy," Rev. Keeler told Judge Giesler as he passed over the prize. "Christ has been served."

Rev. Korn was unable to attend this year's Thanksgiving potluck because he was in the Philippines to help with reconstruction efforts there.
